Truce in Gaza & Delhi’s connection

Ceasefire has finally become a reality as the new Bennett regime has taken the charge in Israel. The ceasefire between Israel and Palestine has finally begun and restored after 11 days of flare up of Gaza conflict killing over 200 Palestinians including 60 children and over a dozen Israelis.

The conflict was actually flare up of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in May 2021, which was marked by protests and rioting and triggered over 4000 rocket attacks by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad groups.

Reports say that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that a ceasefire proposal, presented by Egyptian government, was accepted by both sides and came into effect on Friday morning ending a mini war like situation in Gaza strip, at least for the time being. The reconstruction process too has started in the Gaza strip.

The escalation did not spare the international media offices too. The building, having offices of Associated Press and Al-Zazira news channel, too had been targeted. As a result both US and UN had to intervene into the matter to bring truce in the region. US President Biden had to call both the Israeli and Palestinian counterparts to restrain in the region. Both the sides were putting pressure for truce in the region.

On the other hand, UN too had to convene an emergency meeting on the issue. But it didn’t work as the voice of right to defend emerged more strongly in the meeting, where Indian voice too was very cautious as both Israel and Palestine have friendly relationship with the India.

India’s relationship with Israel as well as Palestine is very special. While India maintains long standing relationship with Palestine for a long time and also extends support to its cause at international forums time to time, at the same time the Israel has become major partner as far as defense and security is concerned. It is also seen as the major source of agriculture technology and tourism revenue.

The recent mini war like situation certainly put the country as well as world in a catch-22 like situation as nobody can afford a war like situation in this time of pandemic devastation, facing for over one year.

Both US and UN have worked and negotiated hard to bring truce in the region. India too, as the head of Security Council too negotiated for peace in the region. It is another matter that voice for self-defence was more strong in the UNSC.

But as the observers say that it was actually a litmus test for diplomatic envoys and heads of the states to bring peace in the region and it was so as heads of US and UN had to involve in the process with their personal capacities.

In fact, a delegation of the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People visited India in March 2020 demanding more proactive role in the settling of the question of Palestine. The Committee also met Indian External Affair Minister S. Jayashankar and sought Indian support of India for a peaceful solution of the question of Palestine. India, although came closer to Israel in the recent times, but still maintaining a good and friendly relationship with Palestine at the diplomatic level.

The relationship is intact despite the conflict, continued for several decades. The truce agreement would provide a big relief amid the devastation of pandemic.
