Rail tragedy: Need for zero tolerance policy

The most tragic railway accident of 21st century, that killed over 280 people, has raised several issues including overdependence on electronic system, artificial intelligence (AI) and complete computerized environment in the country like India. Although, railway has a robust system to manage and control highly complex and busy railway traffic system but a single incident like this puts a big question mark on the entire competency and capabilities.

It is an interesting fact to know that the top brass of the railway were discussing the rail traffic management and safe and secure journey in a brainstorming session in New Delhi on the same day (Friday) on which tragic incident took place in the evening.

This is unique and complex accident as three trains collided on the track. The initial investigation, although, indicates some signal related issue, as the union rail minister Ashwini Vaishnav indicated during the interaction with media but at the same time he also indicated possibility of involvement of mischievous elements too and sought a CBI probe too in this concern.

It is notable that Balasore is a strategically important area too and known as ‘missile city’. On the other hand, extreme left wing too is active in this area, as it is both tribal as well as industrial hub too. In such a situation, the apprehension has some substance too, as indicated. However, detail report of the technical investigation of the railway is still awaited. PM Modi has already  talked about strict action against guilty in this case.

Moreover, the kind of global support has been received from other nations, too indicates that India’s concept of ‘global family’ is showing its impact. But there is urgent need for zero tolerance policy for any even small accident for safer, better and faster journey in the future.
