Modi nixes scope of agitation

Whether Prime Minister Modi’s address was a masterstroke to nix or nip in the bud to end all the protests in the name of vaccination? The appearance of Narendra Modi on national media to end all the chaos on the issue of free vaccination and ration has certainly worked a lot as the opposition’s mood has been decimated to a great extent during the ongoing battle against Covid despite anguish and anger among the people after reports of massive devastation and death (Over 3.7 lakh or 0.37 million).

The war against Covid has reached to almost third stage of preparations but there was huge infodemic on the issue vaccine and covid treatment. Several state governments including Delhi, West Bengal, Punjab and some others were indulged in the politics of providing free vaccine and free ration to poor. The fight between city government in Delhi and centre on the issue of distribution of free ration took a murky turn after centre’s no on the issue of home delivery of ration.

The announcement of free ration and free vaccine by the PM has certainly finished the causes of agitation by the state governments. However, the issue of bearing only 75 percent cost of vaccination is still a contentious issue between centre and state. Observers believe that despite the promise made by the PM on the issue of providing ration to 80 crore (800 million) to next four months, it is a matter of the fact that food and civil supplies comes under state’s jurisdiction and not under the federal government. So, the Modi government has left ample scope for fight between centre and on both the issues.

But, as it is difficult to resurrect the same anguish among the people and opportunity for the opposition, it is time for Modi government to say thanks to pandemic to decimate opposition’s hope, at least for now.
